Silk Road caravans moved at first light, setting out before the desert heat took hold, the sky still low and gold behind them. This cluster of tourmaline stones fans outward the same way, catching that same early colour, each stone a slightly different shade as it turns. Tourmaline, mined from the mountainous regions of Afghanistan and traded for centuries, a chameleon stone often mistaken for ruby, emerald or sapphire.
